GENERAL INFORMATION:
Ames Velo is excited to host the 1st version of our Gravel Omnium featuring 3 events that participants can enter individually, or as an overall competition.

The Omnium:
To be eligible you MUST enter the Iowa Games Gravel Grinder Long Course, the Sunny Heights Time Trial, and the Crushed Rock Classic Men's or Women's Open Circuit Race. You may enter any combination of weekend races - one event, two events, all three events - but only the categories specified here are eligible for the omnium scoring.

OMNIUM SCORING:

Omnium participants will be awarded points for each stage starting with 100 points for 1st place, and descending value for each place (e.g. 2nd place = 99 points, 3rd place = 98 points, etc.)
Tie breaker will be best finish on CRC Long Course.

The Iowa Games Gravel Grinder, is held under the auspices of the Iowa Games and run by Ames Velo, held on Saturday, June 4. The Iowa Games are open to anyone but only Iowa residents are eligible for Iowa Games medals. BUT, overall results in the Long Course will be scored towards the Omnium

The Crushed Rock Classic and Sunny Height Time Trial are USA Cycling events. All riders must have a current USAC Annual License or purchase a USAC one-day license. The Beginner's races are only open to one-day licensees but you can enter any of the categories with a one-day license. One-day and annual licenses must be purchased on-line. We cannot sell them at the race site though you can purchase them on race day with your smart phone or other internet enabled device.

RACE COURSES:

Iowa Games Gravel Grinder (Saturday 10:00 AM - Omnium Stage 1)

This 19.3 mile course is ALL gravel, and will be contested over 1 lap (Short Course) or 3 laps (Long Course). This course was designed to allow riders to switch directions frequently to avoid sustained headwinds. Each lap will have several short punchy climbs that will make for a challenging day. Long Course racers will return 2 times to Sunny Heights to do a 180 degree turn, where there will also be a bottle drop to allow for rehydration and removal of used bottles.

Sunny Heights Time Trial (Sunday 9:00 AM - Omnium Stage 2)

This new addition to the gravel race lineup is a great opportunity for beginner and advanced riders alike. This individual race of 2.6 miles against the clock will be held Sunday morning and is also the 2nd stage of the Omnium, for those completing that challenge. New to gravel? This is a short and challenging way to participate without having to do a mass start. Riders will be sent off around the course in 30 second intervals from Sunny Heights, and zoom down the infamous Templeton Road climb. Near the end of the 1st mile the road will begin to pitch upwards and continue to challenge racers as they head north. The final stretch heads east across crosswind swept fields and finished right in front of the farmhouse.

Crushed Rock Classic (Sunday 11:00 AM - Omnium Stage 3)

This is THE CLASSIC! The Crushed Rock Classic, or "CRC", is on it's 7th edition in 2022. This 6.1 mile loop features 2 gravel climbs, jeep trails, mowed prairie, and a paved decent on each lap. This is also the ONLY USAC Road Race in the region that is also mixed surface. Any length will be a challenge with the varied terrain, along with the style of racing unique to this one of a kind race. This will also be the final of the Omnium where athletes completing that challenge will face 7 laps (both Men and Women).
This also a perfect event to have friends and family hangout and cheer on each lap up the climb on Templeton hill to Sunny Heights from the family friendly race campus. Live music, free beer, a food truck, and more will be available all day long.

All IOWA residents participating are eligible for medals.
Medals go to the top 3 in each division for both of the race lengths
